Measure the space before choosing a tree

Start with the spot where the tree will stand. In an HDB flat or condo, that might be beside a sofa or in a living-room corner. Check how the room works with a tree there, including access to doors, drawers and walkways.

• Floor space: measure the available width and depth. Mark out the chosen tree’s assembled footprint on the floor and check that people can still move around it.
• Height: measure to the lowest obstruction above the tree, including shelves or light fittings. Allow for the part of your topper that extends above the tree.
• Base and decorations: check that the stand fits the space too. A collar, skirt and presents can take up additional room.

A 6 ft tree is approximately 1.8 m tall, but its width depends on the model. A shorter, fuller tree can take up more floor space than a taller slim tree. Compare both measurements rather than choosing by height alone.

Give the tree a stable base

Assemble the tree with its supplied stand on a level, stable floor and follow the setup instructions. Do not use stacked books or an improvised box to raise a floor-standing tree. Choose a model that fits the available space at its intended height.

Keep the route through the room clear. Before adding decorations, check that the tree is secure and that cables can be arranged without crossing a walkway. A skirt or collar should dress the base, not support the tree.

Shape the branches without forcing the fit

Fluff and arrange the branches according to the tree’s setup instructions. Do not cut branches or force them inward to make an oversized tree fit a narrow gap. Choose a slimmer model or a different location if its assembled width exceeds your space.
